I’m 9 days into the New Year and 10 days into reading “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young. It’s been one of the best selling devotionals for the past 10 years, so I decided to pick up a copy on New Year’s Day.
I’m on Day 10 and I just can’t bring myself to read any more. I. Just. Can’t. I tried to get past how Sarah Young speaks as if she is the actual voice of the Lord. I tried to dismiss the New Age nuances and buzzwords, but the thought kept flooding my mind that this isn’t the Jesus of the Bible. Not my Jesus.
Growing up in a New Age home consisted of visiting witches, fortune tellers, daily Biorhythm, communication with the dead, water witching and going to UFO seminars to watch people share their experience of their abduction. That’s only a small part of what I experienced. The umbrella of New Age covers a lot of turf. New age ‘buzz words’ were my daily reality. Our New Age truth changed depending on our revelation and enlightenment. Truth was not standard. It was fluid. It formed it’s own path as it weaved it’s existence through our mind. Truth grew as the truth was revealed to us.
When I started reading Jesus Calling, I came across quite a few buzzwords that reminded me of the days of my upbringing. 40 years later and alarms were still going off. First off, I am not an apologist~ let me say that right now. I do believe Biblical Truth is necessary for a strong foundation and walk with the Lord. That’s why I feel it is so important to share today’s writing with you.
So, without further delay, here are my reasons why I won’t be finishing Jesus Calling, by Sarah Young.
Sarah Young is speaking as the voice of God himself. THE voice of God. We are humans and with our humanity comes imperfection and miscommunication. The Bible was inspired by God. We have no further revelations or additions to the word of God. Sarah Young urges readers to ‘seek My Face with an open mind, knowing that your journey with Me involves being transformed by the renewing of your mind. I would definitely agree with renewing the mind according to the Bible, (Romans 12:2) but nowhere does she mention basing the renewing of your mind from scriptures. Growing up in a New Age home, I was taught to always keep my mind open to new revelations and experiences based upon dwelling and focusing on the light that was within me. I was my own righteousness. I am positive that New Agers would agree to the fact that they are constantly renewing their minds, but are they renewing their minds according to the Bible? The sad truth about many cults is that they can agree with ‘Christianese’ but they pour different meanings into those words. Sarah Young also mentions to ‘Give yourself fully to this adventure of increasing attentiveness to my presence”. Should we try and be aware of the presence of the Lord? Absolutely. He is with us. But the reliance upon us having an open mind and increasing attentiveness to a presence, and not coupled with the word of God sends up red flags for me. If we are seeking after God’s presence without using the Bible as our foundation then we have made God to be something (and someone) He is not. We have created our own version of God.
“Because I am your constant Companion, there should be a lightness to your step that is observable to others’. I believe the peace of God that passes all understanding will keep our hearts and minds through the most difficult times of life (Philipians 4:7), but let’s get real, nowhere does the Bible mention that there should be a lightness in our step that is observable to others. There are Christians in this life who are dealing with persecution. Other Christians are going through grief due to the loss of loved ones.
When I nearly lost my husband a few years ago there was no ‘lightness in my step’. The last thing we need is being guilted into making us feel like we aren’t up to man made standard. When Paul was released out the window in a basket, fleeing from those who were trying to persecute him, was there a lightness in his step? I don’t think so.
” You can achieve the victorious life through living in deep dependence on Me.” My victory doesn’t come from MY living in deep dependence upon Him. My dependence on the Lord is faulty and I can be fickle in my pursuit of Him. My only HOPE is HIM! My victory comes from realizing WHO the Lord Jesus is and in believing in Him and His truth. My victory isn’t dependent upon anything I do. It’s what HE has done. Plain and simple. Please don’t think you can accomplish anything based on your works. You can’t achieve a victorious life through yourself but you can achieve victory through Him! It’s not about US. It’s about HIM!
“Come to me with positive expectations, knowing that there is no limit to what I can accomplish.” What about biblical expectations? My positive expectations have nothing to do with my Christian Walk.
“Ask My Spirit to control your mind so that you can think great thoughts of Me. Once again… no reference to what the Bible says of who God is, the Lord Jesus or His Spirit. We are finite. God is infinite. Does it really matter what we think of God? Shall we trust in our own thoughts to come to the conclusion of who God is?
“Every time you affirm your trust in me, you put a coin into My treasury. Thus you build up equity in preparation for the days of trouble.” I find comparing God to a bank account very troubling. How dare we put God in our box of humanity and make Him act like a man. God is much bigger than our humanity. Saying otherwise is shameful. My equity is the blood of Christ. No more. No less.
My last quote: “Hope is a golden cord connecting you to heaven. This cord helps you hold your head up high, even when multiple trials are buffeting you” When I was taught about Astral Projection, I was told that in my projections I was connected to a golden cord. As I astral projected, I was told that if I went past the limit of that golden cord, I would die. I was warned to stay within the limits of my golden cord.
I’m sure I’d find many more examples, but I’m done with this so called ‘devotional’. I worship and serve the Almighty God of the Bible and I don’t want my devotion and worship to Him to be tainted by New Age Philosophy. I don’t want to dwell on teachings that are heretical. When the Lord Jesus saved me, He delivered me from these strongholds!
Jesus Calling will be going into the garbage heap.
Jesus Calling Has Been Edited from the Original Version
I feel the need to mention one more thing. The Jesus Calling that you have is most likely NOT the one that was originally published. The original version has been washed clean of it’s New Age references so what you are reading is less new age than what existed in the original.
My prayer is that these words have spoken to your heart. It’s so important to cling to biblical truth in our journey with Him. If you do a google search you’ll find lots more information on this subject and I appreciate you taking the time to read this far! Which devotions would I recommend to someone? The best interpreter of the Bible, is the Bible itself.
I would aso recommend a Strong’s Greek and Hebrew Concordance and simply digging into the Living Word of God.
