Dor the first 23 years of life I went by my maiden name. I’m sure many of you know how difficult it is to make the change when writing your new name or responding when someone calls you by name. Every so often I’d suffer from Amnesia and not respond. It was kin to writing the wrong date after the beginning of the New Year. After 25 years of being married to my husband, my identity is now joined with him and tells everyone who I am linked with. My married name is who I am.
In 1 John, John calls us “Beloved”. John didn’t pull this word out of thin air. No way. I believe that the Lord inspired him to use it to reveal God’s heart towards us. The word Beloved means to be esteemed, to be God’s favorite, to be worthy of love. You are worthy of a love that stands not on your merit, but on everything He has done. His reconciliatory work is the foundation of our identity. Even if we are not worthy, the Lord Jesus has made us worthy. We are His Beloved.
Like my experience in getting married, my identity as a child of God might have taken some time to adjust to, but it doesn’t change the fact of who I am. I am a Beloved, child of God and follower of Christ.
After all these years, if someone were to call me by my maiden name I probably wouldn’t respond. My previous identity isn’t who I am today. And it’s the same with our spiritual identity. Your new identity isn’t as a sinner. Your identity is as a blood bought Christian who stands in the grace of God. You are who God has declares you to be!
