I formed the clay between my hands, kneading, molding and forming while pretending I was a sculptor. I formed a stubby cone shape, added a ball of clay on top for a head, and two triangular ears. I formed eye sockets with the tips of my thumbs and punched eye holes with a toothpick. 2 blotches of paint served as eyes. I chose yellow for the body of my cat because I wanted her to match my blonde hair. When my teacher handed my finished product after cooling from the kiln, I was shocked to see my cat had turned NEON green. Yes. Neon Green. I had used the wrong type of paint.
As time passed, other creative ventures came into play but something was missing. I longed to couple my faith with my creativity and for a deeper meaning.
Why I create?
Creating has became a way of expression for me. When the words were overflowing… I created. When the words were difficult to find…I created. When the words were inexpressible… I poured my heart out in worship…and created again.
I have found that creativity without God glorifies Man and that creativity with God points to the One and Only King.
Creativity + Faith
It’s my heart’s desire that my creative heart will praise the One who, like that lump of clay I molded as a child, has perfectly molded me and shaped me in my mother’s womb. He has gifted me with the ability to work with my hands and I want the creative expressions of my heart to bring Glory to Him.
When I gifted Neon Kitty to my Mom, I told her how ugly she was. She reassured me otherwise and told me my ‘work of art’ was beautiful. Her words still resonate to this day. I’d like to think that God is also pleased with the creative works of my hands, simply because they give Him honor and glory.
